Second Wind for Online Casinos

All may not be lost for online casinos in the United States.  Representative Barney Frank promised thousands of poker players at this year’s World Series of Poker that online casinos would be legal in the United States by the end of the year.  That all seem lost when Frank’s proposed legislation – HR 2266 and HR 2267 – kept being pushed further and further back on the agenda do to more pressing economic issues.

It seems that while Representative Frank may not be able achieve his goals for some parts of his legislation, he is determined to at least keep his promise.  The whole purpose of HR 2266 was for it to be passed before the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act went into affect on the first of December.  That clearly is not going to happen, however the reign of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act may be very short lived.

The House Financial Services Committee, the committee over which Representative Frank is the chair, will finally be holding hearings for the his online casino legislation on December 3rd

There is undoubtedly a sense of urgency.  The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has already done a lot of damage to online casinos and up until this point the law was not even in effect.  Barney Frank has garnered enough support for online casino regulation to have a very good chance of passing.  To further offset the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act supporters have sent a letter to the Department of the Treasury to delay implementation of the law.
