EC to the RescueEurope may not be the most religious of continents, but thank God for the European Commission. It may be the only voice of reason on the topic of online casinos. Pressure from the European Commission is also responsible for the United States being held accountable for its protectionist actions against online casinos. Once again the influence of the European Commission may be called upon, but this time it is within their own jurisdiction. Poland is attempting to find a “solution” to famous athletes wearing the names of famous online casinos and online gambling companies on the front of their jerseys during televised matches. To the soccer teams, all over the world, that are involved in such sponsorship, the logos on the jersey are just another endorsement deal, no different from Michael Jordan and Tiger Woods advertising for Nike. However, show companies are not nearly as controversial on the international scene as online gambling. Draft legislation to ban the practice is due for discussion this week in Poland. It has already been an unfriendly month for gambling as Polish President Lech Kaczynski just signed a bill that banned slot machines and put other limitations on the brick and mortar gambling industry. Most people are taking stalk in the fact that it is not likely that the European Commission would allow Poland to pass such a law. That is the beauty of the member states in the European Union; new legislation must pass inspection from the European Commission. Judging from the past online casino friendly acts of the European Commission, it is not likely that they are going to let such a law fly.
