Erasing Past Mistakes

It would be great if the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was never given the chance to be an actual law.  That does not seem like it will be the case since it is supposed to go into affect on December 1st, but the lawmakers that support regulated online casinos are doing every thing the can to postpone implementation of the law.

In truth, if it were possible to rewrite history it would be best that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act did not exist in the first place.  The law was poorly planned with little thought going into its language and is almost impossible to enforce effectively.  The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was also smuggled into law by conservatives during the Bush Administration.

The first thing legislators are doing to avoid ever having to operate under the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is to send a letter to the Department of the Treasury to further delay the implementation of the law.

When Representative Barney Frank introduced HR 2266, also known as the Reasonable Prudence in Regulation Act, he intend for the law to do just that.  The law would have postponed the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act for another year, giving the Congress time to pass Frank’s other pet legislation, HR 2267.

HR 2267 is also known as the Internet Gambling Regulation, Consumer Protection, and Enforcement Act.  This legislation would establish a regulatory environment for online casino in the United States.  A hearing will be held for both bills at the Raburn House Office Building on December 3rd.
