Legal ClarityIt is time for a clarity update on the legal standing of online casinos in the United States. Online casinos are not legal in the United States and yet they are not illegal in the United States. It has been that way for quite some time and to this date it remains that way. Many people may be thinking about the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act that was passed into law in October of 2006. That law has not been put into action yet. It was supposed to take affect on December 1st of this year, however politicians took action and ask the US Treasury to postpone it for another six month. The postponement was meant to give legislators are chance to get better online casino laws on the books. Even if the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was allowed to take affect in December of this year, it still would not exactly make online casinos illegal. What the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act proposes is turning bankers into policemen. The countries financial institutions are charged with the almost impossible task of tracking down illegal online gambling transactions and blocking them. A task only made more difficult by the fact that the law does not clearly define what exactly is constituted as illegal online gambling. By the way, this is an update on the federal standing of laws related to online casinos. Just like all forms of gambling there are some states that clearly forbid online casinos and online gambling: Illinois, Indiana, Louisiana, South Dakota and Washington are among those states. |
