Not So Bad

The Green Dam Youth project in China could have spelt a lot of trouble for the Internet at large, not just online casinos.  China’s plan to install the Green Dam software in ever personal computer sold on the Chinese market did not sit so well with the international trade community.

Although it may seem hypocritical for the United States to up in arms about any the related to censorship and online casinos, it is definitely a positive that the United States got involved in protests against the decree.  The protests of the United States may have had a lot to do with the decree being postponed only days before it was supposed to go into affect.

The major concern was that the internet filtering project would have given the Chinese far to much control over the Internet and it could have been a serious danger to ecommerce and freedom of the Internet.

There have been some crazy ideas coming out of the United States in recent years from states attempting to block their residents from online casinos and other disagreeable sites, but the United States has not dared to pass anything so sweeping as the Chinese to control the Internet usage of the entire country.

For now celebration is limited as no one is really sure why or how long this Green Dam plan is being postponed.

“They are using the word 'delay,' instead of saying they stopped the plan,” Wen Yunchao, a Chinese blogger that has long criticized the Green Dam plan.

“I think that it's possible that at some point in the future the government could still enforce their policy and install software on personal computers that filters the information people are able to look at. So, I am calling this an intermediary victory.”
