Chinese ImpactAlthough many people are still under the impression that China is still a closed off communist country that does not play a huge part in our economic world, that is no longer the case. Part of the reason the Chinese went all out during the 2008 Olympics was to show the world that China was a bit of a sleeping giant. The Green Dam Youth program that would have seen the installation of a Chinese government controlled filtering program on every computer sold on the Chinese market could have had very scary effects. It was certainly enough to shake up the global trading community. The United States’ to trade officials protested the program. To understand the threat that most countries felt over this program, the role of the Chinese computer manufacturing and the Information Age must be understood. Although many would assume that the United States held this title, China actually has the world’s largest Internet population; that is more than 298 million users. This explains why Google is so ready to appease the government when they are dissatisfied with the search engines ability to block unwanted content. Google does a lot of business in China. Now the world’s biggest market for online casinos still exists in the United States. Online casinos are banned in both country, but the United States has not imposed such sweeping filtering projects as the Chinese. President Barack Obama, though he has yet to come out in support or against online casinos, has repeatedly made it clear that he supports the freedom of the Internet. |
