Sometimes it takes an absurd example to bring to light the absurdity of a law.  Online casinos are not having an easy time finding acceptance in the American legal systems.  For whatever reason, the conservative Republican Party has taken on the mission of preventing the regulation and legalization of online casinos in the United States.  The reason often cited by the Republicans is that online casinos are predatory and will lead to all sorts of unhealthy gambling habits that will destroy the fabric of American families.

If the Republicans are in such a mood to protect America’s families from becoming prey to unhealthy habits, the next ban should be issued on the American fast food system.  It does not make sense that Americans are allowed to spend their money freely on deep fried foods that will kill them and not on gambling entertainment.  The argument that gambling is addictive does not hold water.  Clearly, as made evident by the obesity epidemic in the United States, junk food has addictive qualities.

Certainly poor gambling habits can lead to bankruptcy and divorce, but even worse than that, poor eating habits will lead to heart disease and death.  If the Republican Party is interested in saving Americans by telling them where to spend their money McDonald’s, Burger King, and Krispy Kream need to go.  

It is for this reason that Barney Frank has said that legalizing online casinos in the United States is for the purpose of protecting personal freedom.  American workers should be allowed to spend their paycheck anyway they see fit.
