Big Week for Online Casinos

Apparently this is the big week for the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association.  Well, another big week for the Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Associations is more like it.  iMEGA is no stranger to courtroom dramas pertaining to online casinos.  In truth there is no other organization fighting as many legal battles for online casinos as iMEGA.

This, week however, one of the big battles in their overall war is being waged.  Hearings to try the constitutionality of the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act will begin this week.

This hearing is one of two major attacks that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is supposed to face this year.  The other is a bill proposed by Congressman Barney Frank, that would postpone the enforcement of the law for yet another year before it takes effect in December of this year.  The plan was to postpone the law and have it over turned by a second bill before the law could take effect.  Unfortunately bill will not likely see action from the House of Representatives until September of this year.

If iMEGA is successful in challenging the law, the Frank bill may not even prove necessary. It has been widely argued that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is a flawed and unenforceable law.

“The difficulty comes for the processors, the banks and credit card companies,” said iMEGA Chairman Joe Brennan Jr.

“When they're confronted with one of these transactions, it's nearly impossible for them to tell whether the transaction is down for a "lawful" Internet gambling transaction or if it's bound for an "unlawful" Internet gambling transaction.”
