On the RealThe United States is no stranger to gambling. Consumers can find almost any form of gambling offered legally in some state or another. Yet, despite the acceptance of gambling in the United States, online casinos remain the outlier. Online casinos have gotten the bad wrap as the one thing that will simultaneously spike problem gambling and create a whole new generation of problem gamblers in children that receive exposure to the entertainment medium too early. With all of the casinos, slot machines, lottery tickets, movies about casinos, fantasy football leagues, and racetracks, why is it that online casinos receive the blame for something that is as yet not proven statistically. Some argue that the government’s refusal to legalize online casinos has held it back form it true damaging potential. However, it is more reasonable that regulation of online casinos will like make them safer and less likely to cause social disruption. It truth, it sounds like there are some influential figures in the United States that want to keep online casinos out of the American gambling industry as long as possible. With most things in American politics it likely has to do with the one true god in this country; money. Online casinos were for the most part established in off shore countries. Online casinos are largely imports and the billions of dollars that the industry makes will be flowing out of the United States. All of the propaganda against online casinos is likely a clever form of protectionism. But, protectionism is the last thing the global market needs if we ever want to recover from this recession. |
