Legal in the US

Online gambling is not illegal in the United States.  That statement is not exactly true; the answer is a tad more complex.  The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was not intended to put an end to all online gambling.  The law mostly focused on online casinos, online sports betting, and online poker.  There are still a few forms of gambling that it is perfectly legal for United States citizens to engage in online.

Fans of the Kentucky Derby already know well enough that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act had no real bearing on their gambling venue of choice.  It is still perfectly legal to wager on horse races via the Internet.  States like Kentucky run websites that make it very easy for patron to place bets on big races.

The National Football League has taken a very active stance against the legalization and regulation of online casinos.  They claim that legalized online casino will some how endanger the integrity of their sport, although no one is talking about legalizing sports betting online.  Their main concern may be fending off competition.  Fantasy sports leagues are another form of online gambling that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act turns a blind eye to.

The last of the legal forms of online gambling in the United States should come as no shock.  Several states allow players to participate in their state run lotteries over the Internet.  The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act has made it difficult for some states to do business.  Most banks are not equipped to tell the difference between a lawful and unlawful Internet gambling transaction.
