Online Casinos on Backburner It has been reported, though details are still foggy, that the Department of Justice is still going after online casinos and Internet gambling operators that offer services to Americans. This indicates that HR 2266 and HR 2267 cannot be passed fast enough. Unfortunately, it does not look like Barney Frank will be able to move forward until September at the earliest. It is understood that there are more important financial issues, what with the country dealing with an economic depression, but online casinos is actually pretty important in its own right. The online casino issue has really displeased our trade allies in Europe. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, the law being used by the Justice Department along with the Wire Act, to prosecute online casino operators has been seen for what it is; protectionism. It is very likely that online casinos will soon be legalized in the United States, but for some reason the Justice Department has nothing better to do than to continue to enforce a law that most find flawed. The Interactive Media Entertainment and Gaming Association unfortunately did not do a great job of convincing the US 3rd Circuit Court of Appeals that the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act was unenforceable. As a matter of fact the judges did not even find the law confusing as most do. The most the judges agreed to was that what the law was seeking was hard to prove in a real world scenario. Sooner rather than later will probably make everyone happier on the topic of regulating online casinos. |
