Online Casino Ban Does Nothing In Germany

No, Germany is not the only country attempting to protect their land based gambling tax revenue by banning online casinos.  However, what is happening in Germany with regards to online casinos is telling and could inadvertently have an affect on online casino regulation all across the world.  At the very least all over Europe.

What is happening in Germany is nothing spectacular.  Simply put, the ban on online casinos is just not working and further more some states within Germany are acknowledge another course needs to be taken if Germany is serious about protecting consumers and professional sporting events.

Bitkom released a report that showed the current ban on online casinos in Germany has had very little affect.  Last year there were 2.2 million gamblers that visited online casinos.  It appears that this year the number has only been reduced to a round 2 million.  Interestingly a vast majority of these online gamblers are males.  The study revealed that 1.7 million online gamblers in Germany are men

59 percent of the online gambling activity in Germany is dedicated to the lottery.  Online casinos and online poker come in second with 22 percent.  Sports betting is last but still takes a significant piece of the pie at 18 percent.

Achim Berg, an executive at Bitkom has approached the German states about considering taking a different route with online casinos; specifically regulation.  One state, Schleswig-Holstein is already strongly considering the possibility of dropping the Germany Interstate Treaty on Gambling or at least not renewing it in the nation.
