While the United States continues to prove to the world that, though a super power, we are no longer the most progressive country in the world, Europe continues to be more and more advanced; even when they do not want to.  Germany has given it a good solid go at banning online casinos.  It just is not working.  No big surprise.  Just like the history of anything that has been prohibited by the government, citizens continue to find access to online casinos and in the millions. 

Germany has a lot of incentive to step away from their ban on online casinos aside from the fact that it is simply impractical.  The first and perhaps most important reason is that the government can make more money off of an open online gambling market than the current monopoly.  Nothing persuades a government like the opportunity to make more cash.  Online gambling is very popular in Germany.  According to a study from the Association of Information Technology, Telecommunications, and New Media the lottery is the most popular form of online gambling.  After the lottery come online casinos, then followed by online poker and sports betting.

The integrity of professional sports is another important issue that is related to online gambling.  Germany’s soccer leagues have been plagued with illegal betting scandals of late.  The ban has proven in effective in preventing such problems.  It is clear that the only way to slow down and stop betting scandals in sports is to regulate online sports betting.
