A New HopeSupport for regulating online casinos is growing stronger in the United States Congress. For quite some time it has been mainly Representative Barney Frank carrying the banner for online casinos. His bill HR 2267 has gained several cosponsors and the numbers continue to grow each week. Now a voice from the United States Senate has emerged. Senator Robert Mendez has introduced legislation aimed at legalizing online casinos in the United States. Like Frank, Mendez aims to overturn the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act. The Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act is a problematic law, passed by the majority Republican government back in 2006. Now the law is about to be enforced in December of this year. The problem is that many believe the law is almost completely unenforceable. Financial institution are not exactly sure what is considered unlawful Internet gambling, nor do they have the means to accurately track their transaction. Poker is perhaps the most popular game at online casinos and has always walked a fine line as to whether or not it is considered a game of chance or skill, which is the major deciding factor as to whether Americans can currently wager on the game legally. “Whether poker is luck or skill should not be the issue that lawmakers are addressing,” said observer Kelly Kraus. “The real issue is that online gambling, whether skill or luck, should be made legally available to people in the US.” If things continue the way they have online casinos will be regulated in the United States before you know it. |
