Against All LogicThere are no studies that have confirmed the fear that online casinos are somehow more addictive than brick and mortar casinos. I will agree that that the theory makes sense, but studies have simply shown otherwise and it is not okay for groups to make these assertions about the online gambling industry without any proof. It is logical that one would assume that online casinos could pose more of a threat to problem gamblers than brick and mortar casinos. Brick and mortar casinos require travel. Gamblers either have to drive or hitch a ride to local casinos. In the interval there is time for second thoughts or other obligations to seem more immediate. Online casinos are all about convenience, they exist as sort of a creature comfort. With online casinos there is no travel required; except perhaps from one room to the next. Online casinos are also very private. Now one has to know how often a problem gambler is visiting online casinos if they never have to leave their home. Again, the fear makes sense. The only problem is that this is not what the statistics show. Any studies that have been done on the occurrence and growth of problem gambling has shown there is not much difference in the rate of occurrence at brick and mortar casinos and online casinos. If there was every any difference it shows that online casinos have a slightly smaller rate of occurrence. One thought that has not entered the mind of online casino opponents, is that being at home, perhaps with ones family, is a strong deterrent from gambling away ones life savings. |
