Brazil Fails to Learn Lesson

Brazil is considering new legislation to ban online casinos but the wording does not seem all that new.  Like a horror movie creature, the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act first introduced by conservatives in the United States Congress back in 2006, continues to rear its ugly head in other countries.  Countries like Brazil continue to adopt forms of this law has been almost completely unsuccessful in the United States.

Part of what made the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act seem so brilliant was that it was able to curb online casinos without damaging the Internet.  Most politicians in America, at least the sensible one, know that placing government restrictions on the Internet would be one of the worst things that could happen to one of the most powerful tools in the history of man.

This logic makes it even more senseless for Brazil to have taken on a law like the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act, because in addition to proposing such a law Brazil is also considering legislation that would require Internet Service Providers to block any URLs relating to online casinos and online gambling.

Blocking URLs on a government level is censorship.  Such censorship leads to the ruin of the Internet as a practical source of information.  What makes the Internet so great is that the information is all their, good and bad, accurate and inaccurate.  Once a government has a say in what citizens can view online, the internet becomes as tainted as the media or the school systems.
